IN THE VICINITIES
Upper Bergamo

Upper Bergamo, also known as the Upper City (Città Alta), is a medieval city. It is enclosed by 16th-century bastions built during the Venetian dominion, which were added to pre-existing fortifications in order to make it an impenetrable fortress.
Bergamo is one of for Italian cities (Ferrara, Lucca and Grosseto) whose historic district has remained entirely enclosed by walls that have retained their original appearance over the centuries.

The most renowned and frequented area in Upper Bergamo is the Piazza Vecchia with the Contarini fountain, the Palazzo della Ragione, the Municipal Tower (known as the Campanone, the Big Bell) which every evening at 10 p.m. rings 180 times in memory of the closing of the gates of the Venetian walls-and other surrounding buildings. Facing the Palazzo della Ragione is the majestic white Palazzo Nuovo which houses the Angelo Mai Library.
The Upper City may be reached on foot by stone stairways that connect it with the lower city, by car (banned during summer weekends and Sunday afternoons), by cable railway or by bus.
